Welland Ship Canal



Welland Ship Canal, Canadian waterway running 27.6 mi (44.4 km) from Port Colborne on Lake Erie to Port Weller on Lake Ontario to form a major link of the Saint Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway. The canal was built 1914–32, modernized in 1972, and has a minimum depth of about 30 ft (9.1 m). It has 8 locks to overcome the 326-ft (99.4-m) difference in height between Lakes Erie and Ontario.
