Weems, Mason Locke (1759–1825), U.S. Anglican Church minister, writer, and traveling bookseller. He wrote popular biographies of noted Americans that were more entertaining than accurate. His biography of George Washington, The Life and Memorable Actions of George Washington, contained the fictitious tale about George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.
