Frank Wedekind

Wedekind, Frank (1864–1918), German playwright and actor. His work denounced a corrupt bourgeois society that had no interest in the arts or learning, and that was stifling the freedom of individuals. His plays include The Awakening of Spring (1895), Earth Spirit (1895), and Pandora's Box (printed 1904). Although Wedekind was considered scandalous by many in his time, he had a strong following and inspired modern dramatists, including Bertolt Brecht.
