Webb



Webb, name of 2 English social reformers and economists. Beatrice Webb (née Potter, 1858–1943) studied working life for her Life and Labour of the People in London (1891–1903). Her husband, Sidney James Webb (1859–1947), was a Labour member of Parliament (1922–29) and held several cabinet posts. The couple were leading intellectuals of the Labour movement and wrote together The History of Trade Unionism (1894). They were Fabians and helped found the London School of Economics in 1895 and the left-wing journal The New Statesman in 1913.
