Watermelon

Watermelon, plant (Citrullus vulgaris) and its edible fruit, with a thick rind, juicy pulp, and many seeds. A member of the gourd family native to Africa, the watermelon has been cultivated for at least 4,000 years. Watermelons, so named because more than 90% of their substance is water, may weigh from 5–40 lb (2.3–18.1 kg) or more and are rich in vitamins A and C. They grow on vines and their pulp is red to pink, yellow, or white.
