Washington Conference

Washington Conference, post-World War I disarmament meetings convened by Pres. Warren Harding in Washington, D.C, 1921–22. Agreements between the United States, Great Britain, Japan, France, and Italy included a limit on each navy's capital ships, restrictions on submarine warfare, and a ban on the use of poison gas. France, Japan, Great Britain, and the United States also agreed to respect each other's Pacific territories. A 9-power treaty, with the additional signatures of Belgium, China, the Netherlands, and Portugal, guaranteed China's territorial integrity.
