Thomas Ustick Walter



Walter, Thomas Ustick (1804–87), U.S. architect known for the classical Greek influence in his designs. Walter was professor of architecture at Franklin Institute in Philadelphia; president of the American Institute of Architects (1876–87), and designer of Founder's Hall, Girard College, Philadelphia. Walter is best known for his designs of the additions and new dome for the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. (1851–65). Other examples of his architectural designs are Andalusia, the home of Nicholas Biddle, and Moyamensing, a Philadelphia county prison.
