Henry Agard Wallace



Wallace, Henry Agard (1888–1965), 33rd vice president of the United States (1941–45). A distinguished agricultural economist and plant geneticist, he was secretary of agriculture under President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933–41). His success with New Deal farm programs led to the vice presidency. He became secretary of commerce (1945) but was dismissed (1946) for criticizing Truman. He ran unsuccessfully in 1948 as presidential candidate of the Progressive Party.
