Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright



Wainwright, Jonathan Mayhew (1883–1953), U.S. general. A veteran of World War I, he was commander of the defense of the Philippines during World War II. Despite great courage, he had to surrender Bataan and Corregidor to the Japanese in 1942, upon which he was taken as a prisoner of war until 1945. He was awarded the Medal of Honor on his return.
