Vincennes

Vincennes, city on the Wabash River in southwestern Indiana. Founded in 1732 by François-Marie Bissob, sieur de Vincennes, the city was Indiana's first permanent settlement. In 1779 it was taken over by U.S. forces under George Rogers Clark. The Northwest Ordinance (1787) brought settlers from Kentucky, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Today, Vincennes is the seat of Knox County. It is an agricultural, industrial, and coal-mining center.
