Videodisc

Videodisc, flat, round, plastic platter on which both picture and sound are reproduced on a television set. Unlike a video cassette recorder (VCR), a videodisc cannot record television programs off the air. Videodiscs do, however, offer superior picture and sound quality. There are 2 different videodisc systems: one employs a mechanical stylus and the other a laser. Originally developed in the 1970s for use as home entertainment, videodiscs are now used widely in education and industry.
