Andrea del Verrocchio

Verrocchio, Andrea del (1435–88), Italian sculptor, painter, and architect. Verrocchio trained as a goldsmith and probably learned painting under Fra Filippo Lippi. Many of Verrocchio's sculptures survive, but only 1 or 2 paintings are positively identified as his. His works are characterized by naturalistic poses, strong forms, and careful craftsmanship. His most famous works include the bronze sculptures Christ and Saint Thomas and David and an equestrian statue, the Colleoni Monument. Leonardo da Vinci and Il Perugino were among Verrocchio's students.
