Varicose vein



Varicose vein, enlarged or twisting vein, usually occuring in the legs, resulting from incompetent or damaged valves in the veins. Unpleasant in appearance, they cause venous stagnation, with skin eczema and ulcers on the inside of the ankle, hemorrhage, and edema (swelling). Treatment includes support stockings and, in more serious cases, removal through surgery.
