Jan Van Eyck

Van Eyck, Jan (1390–1441), Flemish painter. The first leading artist from the Netherlands, he collaborated with his older brother, Hubert (c. 1370–1426), on the Ghent altarpiece. Completed in 1432, it comprises more than 250 figures in 20 panels. Van Eyck's other important works include a number of portraits, such as Giovanni Arnolfini and His Bride (1434). All are remarkable for realistic, closely observed details. He was the first painter to develop effects of richness, brilliance, and intensity in oil paint.
