Carl Van Doren



Van Doren, Carl (1885–1950), U.S. author, educator, and literary critic. Van Doren taught at Columbia University (1911–30) and was an editor of the Cambridge History of American Literature (1917–21); The Nation (1919–22); and Century Magazine (1922–25). He is best known for his biographies, including Swift (1930), Sinclair Lewis (1933), and Jane Mecom (1950). He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1939 for his biography Benjamin Franklin (1938).
