Valparaíso



Valparaíso (pop. 301,600), seaport city in central Chile, capital of Valparaíso province. The city, founded in 1536, lies on the Pacific Ocean about 70 mi (110 km) northwest of Santiago. It is a major center for manufacture. Chief products include chemicals, textiles, tobacco, sugar and machinery.
