Utrecht

Utrecht (pop. 234,000), city in the central Netherlands. Built on the site of a Roman fort, it was during its early history the residence of several German emperors. Until the 15th century, it was the region's most important cultural and industrial center, a role eventually taken over by Amsterdam. In 1579, representatives from the northern provinces met in Utrecht and signed the Union of Utrecht, uniting them against Spain and setting up the eventual formation of what is now the Netherlands. Today Utrecht is an important cultural center and the site of many historical buildings, medieval churches, museums, and universities. It is also the headquarters of the Netherland's rail network. Chief industries include construction and metalworking.
