Uranus

Uranus, god of the sky in Greek mythology. His union with Gaea, the earth, produced a race of giants known as the Titans. Because Uranus hated and feared his offspring, he forced them to live deep within the earth. The Titan Cronus rebelled against his father's decree, attacking and emasculating Uranus, a wound that separated Uranus from Gaea. (The myth may have originated as an explanation for the separation of the sky and earth.) The function of Uranus as god of the sky was eventually taken over in Greek mythology by Zeus, a son of Cronus.
