John Updike



Updike, John (1932– ), U.S. novelist, short-story writer, poet, and critic. He has dealt with the trials of contemporary life in such novels as Rabbit, Run (1960), Couples (1968), Bech: A Book (1970), The Coup (1978), Rabbit is Rich (1981, Pulitzer), The Witches of Eastwick (1984), S. (1988), Rabbit at Rest (1990; Pulitzer), Brazil (1994), and Toward the End of Time (1997). He published a book of memoirs, Self-Consciousness, in 1989.
