Truman Doctrine



Truman Doctrine, U.S. declaration (1947) stating the United States would “support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.” Aimed at halting communist expansion and aggression, the Truman Doctrine provided substantial aid to Greece and Turkey, helping those nations defeat communist guerrillas.
