Treaty

Treaty, agreement between states. Treaties are bilateral (between two states) or multilateral (between several states), and cover matters such as trade, tariffs, taxation, economic and technical cooperation, diplomatic relations, international boundaries, extradition of criminals, defense, and control of arms and aggression. Some treaties, for example the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), are military; others setup international organizations, which have become an important part of modern international relations.
