Transvaal



Transvaal, former province in the Republic of South Africa, between the Vaal and Limpopo rivers in the northeast. It is mainly high veld, 3,000–6,000 ft (914–1,829 m) above sea level. The capital is Pretoria and the largest city is Johannesburg. Mineral wealth includes gold, silver, diamonds, coal, iron ore, platinum, asbestos, and chrome. Its farmlands are noted for their cattle, corn, and tobacco. In 1993 the province was split into four new provinces.
