Tranquilizer

Tranquilizer, any of the agents that induce a state of quietude in anxious or disturbed patients. Minor tranquilizers are sedatives (e.g., benzodiazepines) valuable in treating anxiety. In psychosis, especially schizophrenia and (hypo) mania, major tranquilizers are required to suppress abnormal mental activity, as well as to sedate; phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine) are often used.
