Trade route

Trade route, land or water route used to transport goods from one area to another. Trade routes have historically led to the development of civilizations, the growth of cities, and the interchange of ideas. They have existed since ancient times and have increased in number and importance as civilizations have grown. The search for trade routes has contributed to the exploration of new territories and the establishment of colonial empires. Today an extensive network of air, land, and water routes covers all parts of the globe.
