Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec



Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri de (1864–1901), French painter and lithographer who portrayed Parisian nightlife. Born into an old aristocratic family, he was crippled at 15, studied art in Paris, and settled in Montmartre to paint the entertainers and circus performers who lived there, such as Jan Avril and Aristide Bruant. Influenced by Edgar Degas and by Japanese prints, his work did much to popularize the lithographic poster.
