Torpedo



Torpedo, self-propelled streamlined missile that travels underwater, its explosive warhead detonating when it nears or strikes its target. The torpedo was invented (1866) by Robert Whitehead, a British engineer. Torpedoes are now chiefly antisubmarine weapons.
