Topeka



Topeka (pop. 119,000), state capital of Kansas, located on the Kansas River in the northeastern part of the state. Topeka was laid out by Free Staters in 1854, following passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act that opened the territory to popular sovereignty, and in 1861 was chosen as the state capital. Headquarters of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, Topeka is also a major agricultural, livestock, and manufacturing center, and is home to the Menninger Foundation, one of the world's leading psychiatric facilities and research centers.
