Tonkin



Tonkin, historic region of Southeast Asia, now comprising most of northern Vietnam. It was the European name for the region around the Red River delta, which became a French protectorate in 1883, part of French Indochina. Under Japanese occupation during World War II and thereafter a French protectorate again, Tonkin became part of independent North Vietnam with the departure of the French in 1954.
