Toltec

Toltec, Native American civilization dominant in the central Mexican highlands between the 900s and 1100s. The Toltec god was Quetzalcoatl, for whom they performed human sacrifice. The Toltecs, sophisticated builders and artisans, erected their capital at Tollán (ruins near modern Tula, 60 mi [96.5 km] north of Mexico City). The dominant group were Nahuati speakers. Aztecs and others overran the area and adopted various aspects of Toltec culture.
