Titanic, 46,328-ton British liner that sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage. At least 1,500 of the 2,200 aboard drowned. After the disaster (caused mainly by excessive speed), lifeboat, radio watch, and ice patrol provisions were improved.
