Tintoretto

Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti; 1518–94), Venetian mannerist painter of the Renaissance. His popular name, Tintoretto (“Little Dyer”), refers to his father's occupation. Influenced by Titian and Michelangelo, Tintoretto's paintings and frescoes are characterized by free brushwork, dramatic view-point, movement, monumental figures, and rich colors. He sought to express drama through color and light, as in Saint Mark Rescuing a Slave (1548), the Scuola di San Rocco Life of Christ (1564–87), and his masterpiece, The Last Supper (1594).
