Timpani

Timpani, or kettledrums, drums having a calfskin head over a hollow brass or copper hemisphere. They were first used in orchestral music in the 1600s. A set of timpani usually consists of three drums. Pitch is governed by the tension of the head, which can be adjusted. Tone may be varied by the type of stick used for play and by the region of the head struck.
