Tianjin



Tianjin, or Tientsin (pop. 5,770,000), international port city on the Hai River in northeastern China. One of China's largest cities and Beijing's major port, it is a viable industrial center producing machinery, textiles, chemicals, and consumer products, in addition to offshore oil production. Tianjin was occupied by Western powers during the Boxer Uprising (1900) and was controlled by Japan from 1937 until the end of World War II. A major earthquake inflicted serious damage to Tianjin in 1976.
