Thutmose III, or Thothmes III (d.1450 B.C.), king (c.1490–36 B.C.) of ancient Egypt. Upon accession to the throne, his half sister and wife, Queen Hatshepsut, acted forcefully as his governing ruler. Upon her death he became sole ruler and a brilliant leader and conqueror, expanding Egypt's boundaries, increasing its wealth, improving its manpower, and building and enlarging numerous temples, including the temple at Karnak.
