Thiopental

Thiopental, drug used in general anesthesia. It is commonly known by its trade name, Pentothal or Sodium Pentothal. It was first demonstrated in 1934. Because it will not burn or explode, it is preferred over combustible anesthetics, such as ether. It is often used, usually by injection, to begin the anesthesia process. Small doses tend to release emotional inhibitions, and it is sometimes used in the treatment of psychiatric patients.
