Theodoric

Theodoric (A.D. 455?–526), conqueror of Italy, king of Ostrogoths. He inherited the crown from his father Theodemir (A.D. 471). With the help of the Byzantine emperor, Zeno, Theordoric and his barbarians defeated Odoacer, the ruling barbarian of Italy (A.D. 493). Rather than tyrannize the Italians, Theodoric respected Roman citizens and used their political and legal institutions during his peaceful rule. He allowed Catholics to practice their religion even though his Arian beliefs conflicted with the beliefs and doctrines of the church. His elaborate tomb is located in Ravenna, Italy. Theodoric was known in Germanic legends as Dietrich of Bern.
