Terrapin

Terrapin, turtle (family Testudinidae) of fresh or brackish water, with diamond-shaped plates on its shell. It grows to 8 in (20 cm) and is found from Massachusetts to Mexico. At one time a cheap food for slaves, it became a luxury dish as Terrapin à la Maryland. The name is sometimes given to all brackish and freshwater turtles.
