Taro

Taro, plant (Colocasia esculenta) of the arum family whose rhizomes provide a starch food for millions of people in eastern Asia and the Pacific. Taros have to be peeled to remove a poisonous acid compound, and they do not provide an adequate diet by themselves. In Hawaii taro is fermented to make poi.
