Taos



Taos (pop. 3,369), historically significant city in New Mexico, located at the base of the southern Rocky Mountains, 75 mi (121 km) north of Santa Fe. It was the site of an ancient Pueblo Indian village as well as a farming center for early Spanish settlers. Taos was also a Spanish and Indian trading post and the center of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. During the 1900s, the city achieved popularity as an artists' colony. Taos is frequently visited by artists and tourists.
