Taipei



Taipei (pop. 2,696,100), capital and largest city of Taiwan, lying to the north on the Tanshui River. A major industrial city, with steel plants, oil refineries and glass factories, Taipei is also the cultural and educational center of Taiwan. Founded in the early 1700s, it became capital of the Nationalist Chinese government in 1949.
