Synchrotron

Synchrotron, type of particle accelerator in which a doughnut-shaped ring of magnets around a vacuum produces a magnetic field that rises in intensity as the accelerated protons rise in velocity. This keeps the particles moving in circular orbits whose radii remain constant. The design, which requires no magnet in the center, allows rings to be built of several miles in diameter.
