Swastika, ancient symbol of well-being and prosperity employed by such diverse peoples as Greeks, Celts, Native Americans, and the Hindus of India, where it apparently arose. The word comes from the Sanskrit for “good fortune.” In the 20th century the symbol became infamous as the emblem of Nazism.
