Thomas Sumter



Sumter, Thomas (1734–1832), partisan of the American Revolution who formed a guerrilla band and harassed the British in the Carolina campaign (1780–81). He had notable successes at Hanging Rock, Fishdam Ford, and Blackstock. Later he was a South Carolina member of the House of Representatives (1789–93; 1797–1801) and Senate (1801–10). Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor was named for him.
