John L. Sullivan



Sullivan, John L., U.S. boxing champion. Sullivan was the last bare-knuckle heavyweight champion, winning the title from Paddy Ryan in 1882 and defending it again in 1888 and 1889. He then boxed with gloves under the Queensbury Rules, losing his title to James J. Corbett in 1892.
