Alfredo Stroessner



Stroessner, Alfredo (1912– ), president of Paraguay (1954–89). An army commander, he took power in a coup and established a totalitarian dictatorship that proved one of Latin America's most stable. He was ousted in a coup in 1989 during his eighth term as president.
