Streep, Meryl (Mary Louise Streep; 1949– ), U.S. actress. Streep made her New York stage debut in 1975. She has appeared in many successful films, including The Deer Hunter (1978), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979; Academy Award, best supporting actress), Sophie's Choice (1982; Academy Award, best actress), Silkwood (1983), Out of Africa (1985), A Cry in the Dark (1988), House of the Spirits (1992), The River Wild (1994), and The Bridges of Madison County (1995).
