Henry Lewis Stimson



Stimson, Henry Lewis (1867–1950), U.S. politician, author of the Stimson Doctrine. As secretary of state (1929–33), he declared at the time of Japan's invasion of Manchuria that the United States would not recognize any territorial changes that impaired U.S. treaty rights or were brought about by force. As secretary of war (1940–45), he advocated development and use of the atomic bomb.
