Sir Richard Steele



Steele, Sir Richard (1672–1729), Irish-born English essayist, playwright, and poet. His first play was The Funeral (1701) and his last, The Conscious Lovers (1722). He founded a periodical The Tatler (1709–11) and soon began collaborating with Joseph Addison. Together they founded the Spectator (1711–12). The Tatler and the Spectator contained their essays on theater, literature, and family life.
