Spelling

Spelling, often referred to as orthography, manner in which letters represent words in writing. Orthographers study sound and letter relationships, base words and affixes (which include prefixes and suffixes), preferred spellings of words, spelling rules and exceptions, homophones, and word pronunciation. Individuals devise their own methods for correct spelling, which may include word visualization, spoken pronunciation, syllabic division of words, repeat writing of the word, and using the word in context.
