Spanish fly



Spanish fly, beetle found mainly in southern Europe. It is the source of cantharidin, which causes blistering and bleeding of the skin and was a fashionable remedy for many diseases in the 19th century. It was also alleged to be an aphrodisiac. When taken by mouth, it is poisonous.
